APACHE - PART II

Written by Cas Nolan

Incredible Bongo Band

Thirteen years after the Shadows witnessed Lordan’s superhuman mad dog ukelele skills, a fellow by the name of Michael Viner picked up Apache. Viner was a genius, who knew that everything sounded better with Bongos. On his first (and second last) album (which Ringo Starr was rumoured to have played on), he did a cover of Apache which pretty much went unnoticed, until the Godfather of Hip-Hop, Mr Big King Super Fresh Kool DJ Motherfuckin Herc picked it up.

Michael Viner: Bitches & Bongos

In the 70’s, Herc would throw wild ass parties, and play his funky vinyls for the masses. He started to notice the response of the dancers when songs with heavy drum beats came on, and he liked what he saw. He began to experiment with isolating the instrumental portion of the record which emphasised the drum beat, and switch back and forth to draw them out. Breakdancing was born! It wasn’t until he got a copy of Viner’s “Bongo Rock” that breakers started to hit the floor. Breakers would go apeshit insane for Apache, and it didn’t matter where they were, if they were in a supermarket they would have to hit the ground spinning. It was their new anthem.
